BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bucknell men's soccer team continued its winning ways with its fourth-straight road win of the season, defeating Canisius, 2-0, at the Bulls Fall Invitational hosted by the University of Buffalo on Sunday, September 8. With the victory, the Bison claimed the tournament title.
In addition, Bucknell freshman goalkeeper Adam Edwards was named the tournament's Defensive MVP after two shutout performances.
Senior Elliott Maruffi-Cowley got Bucknell on the board against Canisius, taking a pass from junior Chris Beekman at the 19:35 mark of the first half for a 1-0 Bison lead. Sophomore Jonathan Hemmert was also credited with an assist on the play.
With just over seven minutes left to go in the game, sophomore Dennis DeLuca capitalized on one of BU's 22 shots and scored on a pass from senior Nick Taylor to give the Orange and Blue an insurance goal and a 2-0 cushion. With the assist, Taylor stands just one helper shy of breaking into the Bucknell all-time career top-10 assists list.
Edwards was solid in net again, picking up his third-straight shutout of the year with four saves. The Canisius goalkeeper, Dave Borchard, registered nine stops for the Griffs.
Bucknell improves to 4-0 for the first time since the 1990 season. The Bison close out a five-game season-opening road trip at Patriot League rival Holy Cross on Saturday, September 14, at 3:00 p.m. Canisius falls to 0-4.
