Bucknell Offense Explodes for 5-1 Win Over Visiting Niagara

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Pat Glennon scored the final two goals of the contest for his first career multiple goal game, and three other Bucknell men's soccer players tallied once each, on the way to a 5-1 defeat over visiting Niagara on Tuesday, September 24. The five goals were the most scored by the Bucknell offense since defeating Sacred Heart, 5-1, last September.
The Bison jumped out to a 1-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the game when senior Elliott Maruffi-Cowley headed sophomore Jonathan Hemmert's corner cross into the back of the net.
Thirty minutes of back and forth soccer later, the Purple Eagles knotted the score at 1-1 when Mark Spooner nearly mirrored Maruffi-Cowley's goal on a corner cross from Chris Seale. The goal was only the fourth this season allowed by the Bucknell defense.
With 1:01 remaining in the half, sophomore Michael Lookingland II found classmate Greg Buzzell, who one-touched the ball to freshman Scott Visnic for an insurance goal before the half. Despite carrying the 2-1 lead into the intermission, the Orange and Blue were outshot by Niagara 9-7 in the frame.
After a sluggish start to the second period, the Bison started to take it to the Niagara defense, playing an up tempo offense. The pressure paid off when senior Tom Ryan made the score 3-1, converting a rebounded shot from Visnic at the 52:15 mark for the first score of his career. Nearly 16 minutes later, Glennon tallied his first goal of the season, taking a pass from Hemmert on a breakaway to put Bucknell ahead, 4-1, with 12:15 remaining.
Glennon finished the scoring at the 85:14 mark when Lookingland and Buzzell hooked up again to find a waiting Glennon on the left side.
The Orange and Blue, who outshot Niagara 12-3 in the second half, ended the game with a 19-12 advantage in shots.
The Bison improve to 7-1 overall, the best start for the program since the 1983 season. Bucknell will host Monmouth on September 29 at 2:00 p.m. for their fourth-straight home game. Niagara falls to 1-5 overall.
