LEWISBURG, Pa. - Four different players got involved in the scoring as the Bucknell field hockey team defeated Patriot League opponent Colgate, 5-0, for BU's first win of the season. Sophomore Meiko Boynton tallied twice in the victory, while three freshmen, Kirsten Nilsen, Kelly O'Brien and Carli Cataldo, notched one goal each.
Nilsen got the Bison offense started with her second goal of the season at the 20:35 mark. The Orange and Blue took advantage of a corner opportunity as Boynton found Nilsen in front of the cage for the 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, a flurry in front of the goal led to an unassisted score by O'Brien, her second tally of the year.
Both teams settled into a back and forth game before the Bison struck again with 11:56 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Cara Reichenbach drove the initial pass from a penalty corner toward the cage, and Cataldo was there to deflect it in for her first score of the 2002 campaign and a 3-0 Bucknell lead.
Boynton finished the Bison first half scoring, knocking in a pass from Cataldo with 6:20 left in the frame to give BU the 4-0 cushion at intermission. With 17:29 left in the contest, Boynton recorded her second score of the game to give Bucknell the 5-0 victory.
Senior Sonja Wettergreen was solid in goal, recording her first shutout of the season with five saves.
The Bison out shot the Raiders, 16-7, and held an 11-10 edge in penalty corners.
Bucknell improves to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League. Colgate falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action. The Orange and Blue are back in action again on Tuesday, September 10, when they travel to Towson for a non-conference game at 5:00 p.m.
