LEWISBURG, Pa. - A frustrating start to the 2002 season continued for the Bucknell field hockey team Wednesday, as the Bison dropped their third straight one-goal decision, 4-3 in overtime at Drexel. Kristina Backenstose's second goal of the day ended the contest just 3:28 into sudden-death.
Things started swimmingly for the Bison, as Amy Marvel converted a Cara Turner pass for the game's opening tally just 35 seconds after the opening whistle.
Drexel (1-0) seemingly took control of the contest with a three-goal flurry over a span of just 5:11 later in the first half. Kristina Burbich picked up the equalizer with 13:47 left in the half, followed by goals from Backenstose and Lauren Zukowski.
Bucknell answered the Dragon flurry early in the second stanza with a pair of clutch goals from its promising rookie forward tandem. Kelly O'Brien notched her first collegiate tally 6:09 into the half, and just 1:49 later, Kirsten Nilsen scored her first Bison goal to knot the contest at 3-apiece.
The game remained scoreless for the final 27 minutes of regulation, but for the second time in four days, the Bison were bitten in sudden-death. Drexel took advantage of a penalty corner in the fourth minute of OT, with Backenstose finishing an Elizabeth Seidel feed for the winning marker.
Sonja Wettergreen made five saves in goal for the Bison, while counterpart Katie Dougherty turned aside four shots for the Dragons. Drexel outshot Bucknell 16-6 and held a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.
The Bison open Patriot League play Saturday at noon against Colgate at West Field.
