LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team picked up its first Patriot League victory of the season with a 1-0 defeat over visiting Colgate on Saturday, September 21. The win is Bucknell's second-straight shutout and fifth of the year.
Both teams had opportunities early, but the contest remained scoreless at the end of the first half. The Bison held a 6-2 edge in shots at the intermission.
Playing through a steady downpour in the second half, the Orange and Blue continually pushed the ball up the field, keeping Colgate's goalkeeper Will Martin on his toes. Bucknell finally capitalized in the 73rd minute when freshman Scott Visnic's initial shot on goal rebounded off of Martin to the feet of senior Nick Taylor. Taylor one touched the ball into the back corner of the goal to give the Bison the 1-0 lead with just over 16 minutes left to play.
Bucknell had a chance to add an insurance goal 10 minutes later when Visnic eluded Martin for a wide-open goal, but his shot dribbled just short and a Raider defender cleared the ball.
BU dominated Colgate in nearly every offensive category, outshooting the visitors 17-8, while holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Adam Edwards earned his fifth career shutout, recording one save for Bucknell. Martin ended the contest with nine stops.
The Bison improve to 6-1 overall for the first time since the 1990 season. The Orange and Blue are 1-1 in Patriot League play and host Monmouth on Tuesday, September 24, for a 2:00 p.m. game. Colgate falls to 2-2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
