Bucknell Field Hockey Edges Columbia, 2-1, in Two Overtime Sessions

LEWISBURG, Pa. - It took the Bucknell field hockey team three tries, but the Bison finally got a win in overtime this season with a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory against visiting Columbia on Saturday, September 14, 2002. It was BU's third extra session game of the young season.
Sophomore Meiko Boynton collected her own rebound off of the goalie's pads and scored the putback to give the Orange and Blue the 2-1 victory just 3:19 into the second overtime period. The Bison dominated the extra sessions, outshooting the Lions 9-1 in overtime.
Freshmen Kirsten Nilsen and Kelly O'Brien gave Bucknell an early 1-0 lead when Nilsen put an O'Brien pass into the cage just 4:19 into the contest. The Bison had several scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the half, but could not capitalize on eight shots and eight penalty corners.
With 14:23 left in the second half, the Lions' Dana Zullo put back a rebound to pull the game even at 1-1.
After the first scoreless overtime, Boynton ended the game with her fourth goal of the season 3:19 into the second session.
Bucknell dominated the Lions with a 26-5 shot advantage and a 23-11 edge in penalty corners.
The Bison improve to 2-4 overall and will travel to Patriot League rival Holy Cross on Saturday, September 21, for a 12:00 p.m. game against the Crusaders. Columbia falls to 1-1 overall.
