LEWISBURG, Pa. - Katie Niemczyk's goal 7:35 into sudden-death overtime lifted Monmouth to a 2-1 victory over Bucknell Sunday at soggy West Field. The Bison were dealt their second one-goal loss in as many days to start the season.
Under a steady rain, Bucknell struck first when Meiko Boynton fired home a pass from Amy Marvel in the game's 29th minute. It would be the only one of Bucknell's 21 shots to elude Monmouth goalkeeper Carrie Colbert, who finished with 10 saves and several other sliding tackles to prevent scoring chances.
Suzanne DeLorenzo scored the equalizer for the Hawks just 4:55 into the second half, knocking in a long diagonal pass from Megan Kenney.
Kenney made a huge play at the other end of the field with 22 minutes remaining, sweeping the ball off the goal line after Bison rookie Kirsten Nilsen had beaten Colbert.
Bucknell had an excellent scoring opportunity in the opening minute of the extra session, but Marvel's centering pass into the goal mouth just hopped over the stick of a teammate. Niemczyk ended it after a long run along the left wing, a cut to the cage and a point-blank shot between the pads of Bison goalie Sonja Wettergreen.
Wettergreen finished with 10 saves, including seven in the second half. Bucknell outshot Monmouth 21-18 and held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.
The win was Monmouth's first in five all-time meetings with Bucknell. All five contests have been decided by a single goal, with three going to overtime.
Bucknell returns to action this Wednesday, facing Drexel at St. Joseph's University at 1 p.m.
