LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Tarah Trottier snapped a scoreless tie with 12:51 remaining in regulation to lift Central Michigan to a 1-0 victory over Bucknell in the season opener for both squads Saturday afternoon at Lock Haven's Charlotte Smith Field.
The Chippewas outshot Bucknell 31-9 but could not solve All-Patriot League goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen until the game's 58th minute. Trottier's winning goal came from just to Wettergreen's left on a flurry moments after a Central Michigan penalty corner. Wettergreen finished with 16 saves.
Bucknell's two best scoring chances came courtesy of first-year forward Kelly O'Brien, who was excellent in her collegiate debut. Midway through the opening half O'Brien had a ball just hop over her stick from point-blank range. Ten minutes into the second stanza, she followed a 15-yard rush along the left wing with a shot just wide of the far post.
Sophomore Meiko Boynton also fired just wide after a nice individual move in the game's opening five minutes.
Janel Spero made four saves en route to the shutout for Central Michigan.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Bison return to action on Sunday afternoon against Monmouth. Game time is 2 p.m. from Bucknell's West Field.
