WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior All-American Steve Dusseau exploded for nine goals, four coming in a decisive six-goal second-half run, to lead fifth-ranked Georgetown to a 13-7 victory over Bucknell in a non-league men's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon.
The Hoyas remained unbeaten at 7-0 this season, while Bucknell fell to 3-6. The Bison, who were led by Dennis Geraghty's three goals, trailed only 6-5 inside the seven-minute mark of the third quarter but for the second time this week were doomed by a six-goal run. A similar scoring surge lifted Hobart to a 12-11 victory over the Bison on Saturday.
Geraghty's extra-man goal with 3:28 left in the first period tied the game at 2-2, but the Hoyas answered with four straight tallies - three by Dusseau - over the next 10:28 to take a 6-2 lead.
The Bison began to claw back just before halftime, as Chris Cara scored an unassisted goal with 4:48 remaining and Rob Lane converted an Andrew Sanders feed with 1:24 left to make it 6-4 at intermission. The Sanders-to-Lane combination worked again 3:36 into the second half to bring Bucknell within 6-5, but the Herd would not dent the net again for more than 20 minutes.
Dusseau stopped Bucknell's charge with his sixth goal of the day with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter, igniting Georgetown's decisive run. The senior Tewaaraton Trophy candidate scored nine of his team's first 11 goals, the last giving the Hoyas an 11-5 lead with 10:55 to play.
Geraghty scored twice in the last 6:09 but the Bison could get no closer than five goals the rest of the way. Cara, Sanders and Lane matched Geraghty with three-point afternoons. Lane had an assist to go with his two goals, while Cara and Sanders both finished a goal and two assists.
Georgetown outshot Bucknell 44-30 and held a 45-32 edge in the ground ball battle. The Hoyas captured 14 of 22 faceoffs.
Justin Sussman made 12 saves in goal for the Bison.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League action this Saturday at Lafayette at 3 p.m.
