LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team fell to 11-27 overall and 5-11 in the Patriot League with a doubleheader loss to visiting Colgate on Sunday, April 21. The Bison lost a 4-3 decision in the opener, and then fell 6-0 in game two of the doubleheader.
Bucknell scored one run in each of the first three innings on its way to a 3-0 lead. In the first, senior Jenna Demetriades singled down the leftfield line to bring in senior Kelly Dugan who had singled earlier in the inning. The Bison got a second run in the second when junior Meredith Gill, who had singled to open the frame, scored on an error by Colgate's first baseman. The Orange and Blue had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning, but Raiders pitcher Elena Isaac got out of the frame with a strikeout.
BU's third run of the game came in the third inning when Gill singles up the middle to score Demetriades. Demetriades reached base on another Colgate miscue to open the inning, advancing to second. A sacrifice by sophomore Erin Doyle moved the co-captain to third before Gill's timely hit.
The Raiders finally got to Bucknell pitcher Kelli Haskins in the fourth. The visitors quickly got on the board when Natalie Rawson sent a one-out pitch over the leftfield fence for a two-RBI homerun. Colgate put together a rally and scored one more run in the inning on a wild pitch to tie the contest 3-3. The visitors took the lead in the sixth when Emily Wright singled in Rawson, who had opened the inning with a walk.
Isaac then struck out four of Bucknell's final seven batters over the last two innings to preserve the 4-3 win.
Demetriades, Gill, sophomore Kristen Potts and senior Lauren Titus each collected two hits in the contest for the Bison. Amanda Brickell, Rawson and Wright all had two hits a piece for the Raiders.
In the nightcap, Isaac took the mound again for Colgate, tossing a complete game shutout for her third win of the weekend.
The Raiders scored three runs in the top of the third and again in the top of the fifth, and that would be all they would need on the way to the 6-0 win. One of Colgate's runs in the fifth came on Rawson's second homer of the day.
Titus finished a solid day at the plate for Bucknell, going 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Doyle was also 2-for-3 in the game. For the Gate, Dorothy Donaldson collected three hits, all doubles, for a 3-for-3 game at the plate.
Bucknell falls to 11-27 overall and 5-11 in the Patriot League. The Bison remain home for their final home game of the season against Rider on Tuesday, April 23. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
