Bucknell Women's Lax Ends Season with 10-6 Loss to Villanova

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Meghan Carolan scored five goals, all in the second half, to lead Villanova to a 10-6 victory over Bucknell in a Patriot League women's lacrosse contest at soggy West Fields.
Bucknell, which honored seniors Melissa Montefusco, Erin Curtis and Jen Gianis prior to their final home game, wrapped up its 2002 season with a 6-9 overall record, 1-5 in the Patriot League. Villanova improved to 8-6, 4-2, and will compete in next weekend's Patriot League Tournament.
With a steady rain falling for much of the game, Villanova took a 3-2 lead into the halftime break, then tore off four of the first five goals of the second half to take a 7-3 lead with only 11:49 to play. Carolan scored all four goals in the surge.
The Bison had plenty of fight left, though, as Lauren Nuss, Meredith Wright and Suzanne Raffaele scored in succession just 3:22 apart. Raffaele's goal, off an assist from Montefusco, made it a 7-6 game with 5:20 to play.
Bucknell had a possession with a chance to tie, but the Wildcats intercepted a pass and Carolan finished off a fastbreak at the other end for a backbreaking goal with 2:21 remaining. Katie Komlo and Cecily Pierce added insurance tallies in the last 1:35 to seal the verdict.
Nicole Kallis was terrific in goal for the Bison, making 14 saves, including several from point-blank range. Raffaele finished with two goals and two assists, and she finishes the year with a team-high 37 goals. Nuss also had two goals for the Bison.
Montefusco's assist gives her 26 for the season and 72 for her career, both school records.
