LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's men's and women's track and field teams ignored the raindrops and enjoyed a banner day at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, winning quadrangular meets from Kent State, LaSalle and Robert Morris.
The women's meet was exceptionally close, with Bucknell edging Kent State 253-236. LaSalle took third with 80 points, while Robert Morris accumulated 47 points. On the men's side, Bucknell garnered 208 points to outdistance Kent State (171.5), Robert Morris (131.5) and LaSalle (88).
Sophomore Noel Powell and senior Stephanie Bango were the stars of the day for Bucknell. Powell placed first in three individual events and one relay. He captured the 100 and 200-meter dashes on the track while placing first in the long jump. He also anchored the Bison's victorious 4x100-meter relay.
Bango had a hand in two Bucknell records. She shattered her own three-week-old school record in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:09.37. She ran 2:10.02 at the Adidas Raleigh Relays on March 30. Bango also anchored the 4x400-meter relay that ran a school-record time of 3:47.09. Amy Calvo, Rehana Lanewala and LaTonya McSwain put their names in the record book alongside Bango's, breaking the record that had stood since 1999.
Powell's wins in the 100 and 200 were only part of a big scoring day for the Bison men in the sprints. Matt Solomon took second in the 100, while Ryan Newberger and Solomon made it a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200. Solomon, Newberger and David Gabriel preceded Powell in the 400-meter relay.
Also winning for the Bison men were Adam Kauffman in the hammer throw and Nicholas Mousetis in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Richard Alexander enjoyed a fine afternoon in the hurdles, claiming runner-up spots in both the 110-meter high hurdles and 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Bucknell also had two other second-place finishers in field events - Emory Strother in the high jump and Justin McKnight in the javelin.
Bucknell's women's team had six different individuals win events to go along with the record-setting 4x400-meter relay team. Bango's win in the 800 meters was part of a 1-2 finish with McSwain. The Bison swept the two women's hurdles events. In the 400-meter hurdles, Edwina Bourn was victorious, while Kiley McDonald captured the 100-meter high hurdles. In the distance events, Chris Crowe won the 5,000 meters and Kelly Raffety captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Shannon Maher was Bucknell's lone winner in the field, claiming first in the high jump.
Tolu Fayanjuola and Erin Lee both recorded a pair of runner-up efforts. Fayanjuola was second in both the long jump and 100-meter dash, while Lee was second in the javelin and discus throws. Other runners-up were Kelly McConnell in the 1,500 meters, Calvo in the 400, Kim Zimbal in the triple jump and Samantha Klotz and Andrea Nyce in the pole vault.
Bucknell returns to action next weekend at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
