LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell senior Kelly McConnell has received the Subway Athlete of the Month Award for the month of March in track & field.
The award was announced at the monthly Bucknell Women's Sports Luncheon, held Monday, April 1. Sponsored by Lewisburg Subway, the luncheon recognizes one outstanding student-athlete from each Bucknell women's sport in season at that time. The other winners for the month of March, as selected by their respective coaches, were senior Kelly Dugan in softball, senior Brooke Rea and freshman Cody Keffer in water polo, sophomore Samantha Berthod in tennis and junior Nicole Kallis in lacrosse.
McConnell enjoyed an outstanding month for the Bucknell track teams. At the ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championship on March 3, McConnell ran the 1,600m anchor leg of the Bison's distance medley relay team that smashed the school record by 15 seconds in a time of 11:35.10. Bucknell also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship for the event.
In the outdoor season, McConnell has performed well in the Bison's last two meets. She finished fourth out of 37 runners in the 800m run at the Quaker Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, in a time of 2:17.60. She also ran a leg on Bucknell's 1600m relay team that placed first out of 11 schools in 4:01.50.
More recently, McConnell participated in the Adidas Raleigh Relays, held at North Carolina State, and ran an outstanding race in the 1,500m run. She finished 14th in the event in 4:38.38, the second-fastest time in school history. In addition, McConnell ran the 800m anchor leg of Bucknell's sprint medley relay team that finished 10th in 4:05.33.
McConnell and the Bison will compete in their first scoring meet of the season on April 5-6 at the Colonial Relays, hosted by the College of William & Mary.
