LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell freshman Rehana Lanewala has received the Subway Athlete of the Month Award for the month of February in track & field.
The award was announced at the monthly Bucknell Women's Sports Luncheon, held Monday, March 4. Sponsored by Lewisburg Subway, the luncheon recognizes one outstanding student-athlete from each Bucknell women's sport in season at that time.
Lanewala has made an immediate impact on the Bison track & field program as an outstanding sprinter this season. She helped Bucknell win its fourth Patriot League Indoor Track & Field team title in the last five years on Feb. 16-17 at the U.S. Military Academy. Lanewala won the gold in the 200m dash and ran on the Bison's 1600m relay team that won the Patriot League title. For good measure, Lanewala pocketed a bronze medal in the 400m dash.
More recently, Lanewala helped the Bison break the school record in the distance medley relay in amazing fashion at the ECAC Championships Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Lanewala ran the 400 leg of the relay that scorched the track for a time of 11:35.10, an incredible 15 seconds faster than the former school record set earlier in the season. The DMR squad also qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships with their record-setting time, and placed sixth out of 18 teams.
Besides the distance medley relay, Lanewala has broken into Bucknell's all-time top-10 lists in three other events this season. She owns the third-fastest time in school history in both the 200m dash (25.72) and the 400m dash (57.59), and she also ran a leg on the 1,600m relay team that recorded the third-best time (3:49.84) ever at BU.
The Bucknell track & field squad will open its 2002 outdoor season on March 15-16 at the 49er Classic at UNC-Charlotte.
