LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell baseball players Sean Magee and Brian Day have been named as the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week ending March 24.
The pair earned their awards after helping the Bison to four wins in five non-league games last week.
A right-handed starting pitcher, Magee was recognized after hurling 11 innings in two appearances without allowing an earned run last week. He gave up just one unearned run on eight hits. The senior also struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
Magee picked up his second win of the year with five shutout innings in Bucknell's 4-1 win at Mount St. Mary's on March 19. He allowed only four hits and struck out four with no walks. He was just as effective in another start at Bloomsburg on March 24. In that outing, in which the Bison lost 3-2 in eight innings, Magee limited the Huskies to four hits in six innings, and the only run he allowed was unearned. However, he came away with a no-decision after leaving the game in the seventh with the game tied 1-1. He also had no walks against Bloomsburg, and notched three strikeouts. Magee retired nine of the first 10 Husky batters he faced.
Magee is 2-1 on the season with an ERA of 3.03-sixth-best in the Patriot League and the lowest of all the Bucknell starters. He has recorded 22 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched, and has shown great control with just four walks.
Day helped the Bison to a pair of wins over Bloomsburg in a home doubleheader on March 23 by going 3-for-5, including his first career home run. His pinch-hit, grand slam in the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap gave the Bison a 7-6 lead. Bucknell went on to blank the Huskies in the top of the seventh, and Day's homer would hold up as the game-winning hit. The right-handed batter also went 2-for-4 with one run scored as the designated hitter in the Bison's 13-6 victory in the opener.
Day is currently batting .333 (7-for-21) with three runs over 11 games, including four starts at DH or first base.
Bucknell will host Penn State at 3 p.m. on Wednesday before opening its 2002 Patriot League schedule with a pair of home doubleheaders against Holy Cross on Saturday and Sunday.
