LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and although Lehigh threatened late in the game, the Bison held on for a 13-8 Patriot League victory in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Senior Melissa Montefusco got the scoring started with an unassisted goal just 3:32 into the contest. The Bison went on to score two more goals in less than a two-minute span to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Amy Hasler found classmate Laura Nuss for a score at the 25:23 mark, before Hasler tallied her own just 37 seconds later. A goal by sophomore Laura Seiboth, with an assist from Hasler, gave BU a 4-0 lead with 18:15 to play in the half.
Lehigh's Suzanne Aronowitz put the Mountain Hawks on the board with an assist from Sarah Corrigan at the 17:58 mark, before the Bison scored two more quick ones to go up 6-1. Junior Suzanne Raffaele and Montefusco connected for one, and Montefusco netted a pass from Nuss for the other. After a Lehigh score cut it to 6-2, the Orange and Blue closed the half with two more goals, including another from the Raffaele-Montefusco tandem, within a minute of each other to carry the 8-2 halftime advantage.
Hasler struck again just 32 seconds into the second half to push the Bucknell lead to 9-2, before the Mountain Hawks came charging back with three unanswered scores. Raffaele and Montefusco connected for the third time of the day to stop the Lehigh surge, and Hasler added her third goal of the event to give the Bison the 11-5 cushion with 15:16 left in the game.
The visitors mounted another streak, scoring three more over a 1:38 span to get within three, 11-8, with just under 11 minutes to play. Sophomore Meredith Wright and Raffaele gave the Orange and Blue breathing room with two unassisted goals at the 8:24 and 6:48 marks, respectively, to finish the scoring.
Junior Nicole Kallis finished the game with 14 saves for Bucknell, while Lehigh's Vanessa Abbott ended the contest with 10 stops.
Bucknell will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to two-time defending Patriot League champion Lafayette for a 1:00 p.m. showdown with the Leopards.
