UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Four Bucknell players scored in double-figures, and the team shot 55.3% from the field, on its way to a 72-57 first round win over seventh-seeded Navy at the 12th Annual Patriot League Tournament, being held at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
The Orange and Blue fell behind early behind six quick points from Navy's Maile Shimoda. Junior Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) cut the lead in half with three free throws, before the Mids jumped ahead 8-3 with 17:30 to go in the first half. Starting with two more free throws by sophomore Desire Almind (Blairstown, Pa./North Warren Regional) to cut it to 8-4 a minute later, the Bison embarked on a 19-2 run to take a 10-point lead, 22-12, with just over eight minutes to go in the half. Bucknell took advantage of 10 Mids turnovers during the run, and made all but two shots from the field. BU's biggest lead of the half came with 24 seconds remaining after a Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) three-pointer to give the Bison a 34-16 halftime edge.
With 14 of her team-high 18 points in the opening frame, Creamer, the Patriot League's two-time Player of the Year, became the school's single-season scoring leader with 632 points on the year. The old mark of 619, held by Jen Walz, stood since the 1988-89 season.
Bucknell extended its lead to as many as 20 in the second half, before a 15-5 surge by Navy got the Mids within 10, 51-41, with 4:44 to go. The Orange and Blue pushed it back to 13 after Almind's first three-pointer of the season made it 58-45, but Navy refused to go quietly and cut it to eight, 62-54, on a Shimoda three with 1:32 remaining. The score stood at 67-56 with just under a minute to go, but Bucknell, the Patriot League's best free throw shooting team, made five of six down the stretch to come away with the 15-point first round win.
In addition to her 18 points, Creamer had a game-best seven assists. Senior Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) added 16 points and enters Sunday's second-round game against Army needing just one rebound to become Bucknell's career rebounding leader with 893. Also in double figures scoring was Franks with 12 points and game-high eight rebounds, and Almind with 11 markers.
Bucknell improves to 19-9 on the year and advances to the semi-final game against sixth-seeded Army, who upset the third-seed Lehigh, 71-66, in the late game. The Bison square off against the Black Knights at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2002.
