
Bison Track & Field Complete Second Day of Patriot League Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. - After two days of competition, the Bucknell University women's track & field team sits in third place and just 12 points behind the overall leader at the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Army. The men's team is in second place, but trails first-place Army by over 50 points.
The Bison women's team has earned 18 points, and trails Army (20) and Lehigh (30) for first place. Bucknell leads American (12), Colgate (six), Lafayette (five) and Holy Cross (two).
Army has accumulated 87.67 points in taking the lead in the men's competition. Bucknell is in second place at 31.75, followed by Lehigh (21.17), Navy (19), Colgate (18), Holy Cross (16) and Lafayette (9.25).
Senior Becki Marshall and sophomore Maria Garcia each picked up a bronze medal for the Bison to earn six team points. Marshall placed third in the 5,000m run in 17:40.63, the 10th-fastest time in school history. Garcia recorded a throw of 49'5 ?".
Other Bison who contributed to the team score were senior Chris Crowe and freshman Elizabeth Pendelton. Crowe took fourth in the 5,000m run in 17:48.54, and Pendelton placed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 47'4 ?", which ties her personal record that ranks eighth in BU history.
Two other top-10 performances were set during the preliminary rounds. In the 55m dash, freshman Tolulope Fayanjuola placed second while racing to a time of 7.39, sixth-fastest in Bucknell history. Freshman Amy Calvo posted a 26.40 in the 200m dash to finish fifth. Her time tied for the ninth-best ever at Bucknell.
On the men's side, sophomore Noel Powell won Bucknell's first gold medal of the championships, as he won the long jump with a leap of 24'1 ?".
Winning a silver medal was junior Greg Costello, who came painfully close to winning the league championship in the 5,000m run. Costello raced to a time of 14:41.66, just 0.77 seconds behind event winner Frank Malpigli of American. Junior Bryan Johnston finished sixth in the same event with a time of 15:09.32.
The men's team also had a pair of pole vaulters contribute to the team's score. Sophomore Jeffrey Arek took fourth in the event by clearing 14'9", and junior Adam Jacob finished eighth with a vault of 14'3 ?".
The men's 3,200m relay team finished third with a time of 7:43.84.
The championships will conclude tomorrow.
