LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's women's indoor track and field squad has been voted to place second, behind the Black Knights of Army, at the 2003 Indoor Patriot League Championship. The defending Patriot League champions tallied 86 points, four points behind Army, among the league's head coaches and sports information directors during the preseason poll.
Head coach Kevin Donner, 2002 Indoor Coach of the Year, will look to prepare the team for another successful season. Despite the Bison loosing six all-stars to graduation, the pre-season votes picked Bucknell to finish second. The Orange and Blue gained four first place votes en route to 86 points.
Returning Bison All-Leaguers include Rehana Lanewala, who received the gold in the 200m, Amy Calvo, captured second in the 500m, and Nicki Piper, who assisted the 4x400 relay team to a first place finish. Piper worked with the relay to capture a Patriot League record time in the 4x400m(3:49.84). Lanewala and Calvo were members of the 4x800 squad that received a gold in 2002.
The Bison should continue strong in the distance events led by four-time Cross Country All-League performer Theresa Dennis. After capturing the bronze in the 20 lb. weight, Maria Garcia will assist the Bison in points during the Championships.
The Bison recently held the Blue and Orange Open in Gerhard Fieldhouse on Dec. 7 and showed a strong performance. After the winter break the Bison will get back on the track for competition. Bucknell will host the Gulden Relays on Jan. 11 and then travel to State College, Pa. for the Penn-State Octagonal the following Saturday.
