NEWARK, Del. - After trailing by only five at halftime, 28-23, the Bucknell women's basketball team hit a wall in the second half, shooting a dismal 31.8% from the floor en route to a 71-45 loss at Delaware on Sunday, December 8. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Bison.
Delaware connected on just 31.3 percent of its shots in the first half, but the Fightin' Blue Hens opened up the second half on fire, hitting three of their first four shots to open the frame with a 9-0 run. Bucknell trailed 37-23 at the 17:48 mark before responding with five unanswered points to cut it to a nine-point game. That was as close as the Orange and Blue would get, however, as Delaware put together a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to gain an 18 point advantage, 50-32, with just over 11 minutes remaining.
The Bison, who committed a season-high 30 turnovers, went cold from the floor in the game's final eight minutes. Senior Kate Franks hit BU's final field goal of the game with 8:05 remaining in the contest to get Bucknell within 15, but the Orange and Blue would only score four points the rest of the way, all from free throws.
Both teams were sluggish to start the event, combining for only two field goals in the first 5:48 of the contest. The Bison did not get on the board until 4:36 had elapsed when a Desire Almind jumper in the paint was good to cut it to 4-2 in Delaware's favor.
Freshman Jennie Ruth went 3-for-4 in the first half to lead the squad at halftime with eight points.
The two teams combined for 26 turnovers in a sloppy first half. The Fightin' Blue Hens also did a solid defensive job on Bucknell's top three scorers, holding Almind and Molly Creamer to four points each, and Franks to two scores in the frame.
Ruth finished the game with a team-high 15 points, while Creamer was the only other Bucknell player in double figures with 12 markers.
The Bison fall to 3-4 overall on the season and are in action next after a 13-day layoff when they travel to La Salle for a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, December 21. Delaware improves to 2-3 overall.
