Bucknell Men's Golf Takes Sixth at Mershon Classic

TELFORD, Pa. - The Bucknell men's golf team wrapped up its 2002 fall season with a solid sixth-place finish in a 15-team field at the Don Mershon Classic, hosted by Lehigh Sunday and Monday. The Bison shot 309 in a rain-delayed opening round that carried over into Monday, then finished up with a 322 as scores rose across the field.
Bucknell freshman Tom Lane continued his fine debut season with a 36-hole total of 153 (75-78), good for a tie for seventh place. Lane posted two top-10 finishes and four top-15 finishes in six fall tournaments.
Teammates Alex Dolle and Abbie Valentine also placed in the top-20. Dolle tied for 10th with a 154 (74-80), including a two-over-par 74 in the opening round that was Bucknell's low round of the tournament. Valentine shot 157 (76-81) to finish in a tie for 17th.
Rounding out the Bucknell contingent were two more first-year players. Rich Petroni tied for 54th at 167 (84-83), while Pat Pippo tied for 70th at 177 (89-88).
Backed by medallist Michael Ball (75-72-147), George Washington won the tournament with a team composite of 605. The Colonials' opening-round 298 was the only sub-300 effort of the tournament. Lehigh and Colgate tied for second, 10 strokes behind GW. Siena (624) and Drexel (628) also edged out the Bison.
All but one team in the field scored higher round two, with the average round increasing from 79.9 to 82.5.
