NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS - Junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led all scorers with 17 points and seven assists, and three other Bison women's basketball players were in double-figures scoring as the Orange and Blue squad opened the new calendar year with a 73-44 victory over Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne in the first round of the Nassau Knockout in The Bahamas on January 4.
The Bucknell defense stymied the Mastodons in the contest, holding them to a field goal percentage of .254, the lowest an opponent has shot in a game in over two years. The Bison held IPFW to a season-low 16 field goals in the game, and forced the Mastodons into .241 (7-29) shooting from behind the arc.
BU opened the game with an 11-0 run before IPFW finally got on the board with a three-pointer at the 15:33 mark. The Mastodons first three field goals of the game were treys and five of their seven first half field goals came from behind the arc. IPFW closed the gap to eight at 21-13 with 9:36 to go in the half, but the Bison outscored the Mastodons 21-8 over the final 9:30 to double IPFW's score with a 42-21 halftime advantage.
Bucknell's second-half lead never dipped below 18, and the Orange and Blue saw their largest cushion at the final buzzer in the 29-point victory, the biggest margin of victory this season.
The Bison shot 50.0% from the field and 62.5% from three-point territory, including a 3-for-3 effort from junior Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola).
BU improves to 6-6 overall and will face Cal-Berkeley, a winner over Lipscomb in the tournament opener, in the championship tilt at 8:00 p.m. on January 5. The game marks Bucknell's 10th appearance in the title game of a tournament. IPFW falls to 3-11 overall.
