WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bucknell University women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by American University in Washington, D.C. this afternoon in the Bison's Patriot League opener.
Bucknell is now 4-1-0 and 0-1-0 in the Patriot League. American, competing in their inaugural season as a Patriot League member, improved to 3-1-0 and 2-0-0 in league play.
The Bison held American to four shots on goal for the game, but the Eagles made their strikes count, scoring twice in a 6:01 span early in the match. Bucknell's defense would shut down American the rest of the way, though, with Bison goalie Laurie Purse making two saves.
Bucknell had several scoring opportunities late in second half. Junior Tara Utchel hit the cross bar from 25 yards out in the 54th minute, and sophomore Savannah Rennels had a shot stopped by a diving American goalie Jen Liese in the 58th minute. Liese finished the game with six saves as she posted her second consecutive shutout.
Bucknell out-shot American 7-4.
The Bison will return to non-league play on Tuesday when they visit Penn State at 7 p.m.
