LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's golfers Nick Leibowitz (Danbury, Conn./Deerfield Academy) and Jimmy Freeman (Laguna Niguel, Calif./St. Margaret's) were named to the 2001 All-Patriot League Men's Golf Team. All-league status is awarded by virtue of a top-10 finish at the annual men's golf championship. The 2001 championship was held at the United States Naval Academy Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22.
Leibowitz earns his first all-league honors after finishing his spring season with his three strongest rounds at the Patriot League Championship. The junior opened play with a season-low score of 74, and followed that with a 79 and 77 to finish in a tie for ninth place. By shooting three mid-70 rounds at the tournament, Leibowitz significantly dropped his spring average down to 81.9. This season was redemption for Leibowitz, who missed taking the 2000 Patriot League Individual crown after a scorecard mishap at last year's championships.
Freeman lands on the All-Patriot League team as just a sophomore after turning in a fifth place finish for the Bison at the Patriot League Championship. Freeman opened the tournament with scores of 75 and 77 in the first two rounds. He saved his best for last, shooting a career-low 70 in the final round of the championship. His top-five finish earned him all-league honors, making him the youngest Bucknell player to ever be named to the All-Patriot League team. Freeman's spot on the all-league team is redemption of sorts as he narrowly missed the team last season with an 11th place finish.
As a team, Bucknell finished fourth in the standings with a +65 over par, 28 strokes behind the winner of the event, Navy (+37). With a 54-hole total of 917 (299-317-301), the Orange and Blue were just four strokes out of third place.
