Bethlehem, Pa. - The Bucknell men's lacrosse team completed its conference schedule this afternoon with a 12-10 victory over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. With the victory, the Bison finish a perfect 6-0 in the Patriot League and will be heading to the NCAA's in two weeks for the first time in program history.
"Some of the younger guys were able to play this afternoon because of some injuries to the veterans. Lehigh proved to be a worthy opponent and they played one of the best games we've seen this season," commented Head Coach Sid Jamieson, "We were extremely productive on man-up situations and that gave our team a huge advantage. I think the biggest thing is that we have had outstanding leadership and that makes all the difference in the world.
Leading the way this afternoon for the Herd as it has all season was the defense. Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends School) stopped 15 Mountain Hawk shots in the contest. Solidifying its place as one of the best man-down units in the country, the BU man-down unit successfully stopped Lehigh on seven of 10 opportunities.
Only five days after being named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore Kelly Hogue (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) led the Bison in scoring again with three goals. Also chipping in with two goals for Bucknell was sophomore John Terracciano (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) to go with his one handout. Starting his fifth contest in a row, freshman Wes Fetchet (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) tallied two goals and two assists against the Mountain Hawks.
Rounding out the scoring for the Bison were sophomores Andrew Copelan (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon), Chris Cutillo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Sal Cataldo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's), and freshman Craig Fleishman (Wayne, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy). These five all chipped in with one goal to the Orange and Blue cause. Cataldo and Fleishman's goals were both the first of their careers.
The Herd officially end their regular season as Patriot League Champions with a 6-0 league record and 10-3 overall record. Lehigh drops to 3-10 and 1-3 in conference play and will wrap-up its 2001 campaign on Saturday, May 5, versus Lafayette. Bucknell will either play its first round NCAA contest on May 12, at UMBC or on May 13, at Army.
