Lewisburg, Pa. - This afternoon the Bucknell (9-3) men's lacrosse team played the final contest ever on Bucknell's East Field against the Penn State (4-6) Nittany Lions. Leading the Bison to the 10-6 victory over Penn State on senior recognition day was sophomore Kelly Hogue (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) with five goals.
The Herd got off to a quick start as Hogue zipped the ball past Penn State's starting goalkeeper twice in the first five minutes. The Nittany Lions broke some of the Orange and Blue's momentum when Will Driscoll (Fairport, N.Y.) scored at 9:29 in the first quarter to cut the gap to 2-1. Bucknell came right back with two more goals from Hogue and sophomore John Terracciano (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) to extend the lead to three, 4-1. However, Penn State proved its worth as an opponent by running off two more goals before the end of the first period to cut Bucknell's lead back down to one, 4-3. Scoring for PSU was Driscoll and Tim Emmick (Corning, N.Y.).
Driscoll, the leading goal scorer for the Nittany Lions this season, opened the second quarter of play with an unassisted goal at 13:03 to knot the game up at 4-4. Less than a minute after Driscoll's goal, Hogue scored his fourth goal of the afternoon to give the lead back to the Herd, 5-4. Penn State managed to tie the game again, 5-5, as it scored on its only man-up opportunity of the afternoon on a goal from Luke Ogelsby (Bryn Mawr, Pa.). Sophomore Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the Bison into the locker room with a one goal lead by scoring his 36th goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Chris Cutillo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) on a man-up situation.
For the second time this season and second consecutive game at home, neither team managed to score a goal during the third stanza. Entering the fourth quarter down 6-5, Penn State tied the contest for the third time when Emmick scored his second goal of the afternoon. Bucknell responded to this attack by scoring an extra-man goal at 11:06. Giving the Bison the lead, 7-6, was Geraghty on a slick pass from senior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park). Cheng tallied three assists in his final home game at Bucknell while Geraghty brought his season tally to 37 goals. This goal proved to be the game-winner even though the Bison tallied three more goals in the final quarter to give them the 10-6 victory.
Holding Penn State to only six goals was a solid Bison defense, which was anchored by an 18 save performance from sophomore Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends School). Penn State second goalkeeper, Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md.), did a fine job picking up the slack by holding BU to six goals in 52:48 of action. Garrity finished the game with 16 saves.
The Nittany Lions are presently on a two game skid and will play their next contest at Rutgers on Saturday, April 21. The Bucknell men's lacrosse team will now have a ten day lay-off as it prepares for its final conference game at Lehigh on Saturday, April 28, at 1:00 p.m. A victory over Lehigh will give the Orange and Blue sole ownership of the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Title.
