WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross junior Lizz Curll connected on a two run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to help lead Holy Cross to a 4-3 come from behind win over Bucknell in the second game of a Patriot League doubleheader on Saturday, April 14. The Bison won the opener, 4-3.
In game one Bucknell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior third baseman Charity Ford's (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport) single drove in senior outfielder Stephanie Morgan (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff). Holy Cross answered back when sophomore Alyssa Hayden and senior Jamie Olenoski executed a double steal in which Hayden stole home. After Holy Cross loaded the bases with one out and failed to score in the second, the Bison notched three runs in the top of the third. Sophomore shortstop Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) walked with one out to start the rally. After a groundout, junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) singled to drive in Gill. Ford then laced a triple down the right field line to score Dugan. Junior outfielder Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) drove in Ford with a single to center to round out the rally. The Crusaders came back in the bottom of the fifth, placing runners on second and third with no one out but once again failed to score. Holy Cross trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh and was down to its last out before it started a rally. After Curll was hit by a pitch, and Caitlyn McCarthy reached on an error, freshman Nicole Vitti singled to bring HC to within one at 4-3. Another single and a stolen base placed Crusaders on second and third with two outs, but a crucial strike out by sophomore pitcher Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) ended the threat and gave the Bison the win.
In the nightcap, HC got on the board first in the second inning when junior Courtney Dougherty capped off the two-run rally with a single to center. Bucknell answered with three runs in the top of the fourth when Ford scored on a sacrifice fly and freshman Courtney Dohoney (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) roped a single to left, scoring two runs to give the Bison a 3-2 lead. The Crusaders had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the sixth when they had runners on second and third and one out, but failed to score on both occasions. Down to the last at bat, Hayden led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and advanced to third when freshman Christine Clark reached second on an error by junior pitcher Lauren Potente (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland). Curll then followed with a ringing double to left centerfield to give the Crusaders the win.
Bucknell runs its record to 12-19-2, 4-6 in the Patriot League while Holy Cross is 10-17, 5-5 in conference action. The two teams will end the series tomorrow with a doubleheader in Worcester, Mass. beginning at 12:00 p.m.
