LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team split a pair of games with visiting Albany on Saturday, March 24. The Bison fell 2-1 in the opener before getting back on the winning side with a 12-4 win in five innings in the nightcap.
It was Albany who struck first in the opener, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Valerie Terry led off the game with a walk and promptly stole second and third to put herself in scoring position and increase her season stolen base total to 19-of-19. Liz Wieboldt reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Terry. Two batters later, Chelsey LaRue hit a double to center field to score Wieboldt and put the Great Danes ahead, 2-0.
The Bison finally got to Albany pitcher Amy Hawk in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) opened the inning with a triple to right field. Dugan eventually scored on a Great Dane error to cut the lead to 2-1, but that was all the offense the Orange and Blue could muster. Albany's Sarah Maida came in to pitch the final three innings, allowing just one Bison hit.
In the nightcap, Bucknell scored at least once in every inning, including a six-run fourth frame, on its way to the 12-4 five-inning victory. BU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings thanks to three hits and two Albany errors. The Great Danes took advantage of three hits and one Bison error in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead, but Bucknell answered with three runs in its half of the frame to go back ahead, 5-3.
The Orange and Blue exploded for six runs on four hits in the fourth inning behind back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from freshman designated player Jenna Fitch (Wayne, Pa./The Shipley School), junior catcher Kathleen Zeevalk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and junior third baseman Barb Wood (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park), and a bases clearing triple from freshman second baseman Kristen Potts (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg). Albany managed to score once in the top of the fifth inning, but a two-out single to left field by Wood scored senior tri-captain Stephanie Morgan (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) to end the game at 12-4 due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Junior pitcher Lauren Potente (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland) went the distance on the mound for Bucknell, allowing five hits in five innings to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Bucknell improves to 7-6-2 on the year and will host Siena for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. Albany moves to 8-11 overall.
