LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team split a pair of games with visiting Siena on Sunday, March 25. The Bison dropped the opener, 7-3, before picking up a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, Siena got to Bucknell pitcher Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) in the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits in the frame. Two innings later, the Orange and Blue knotted the score, 2-2. Junior outfielder Lauren Titus (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) opened the bottom of the third inning with a triple to right centerfield. The next batter, sophomore shortstop Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), was hit by a pitch. Gill then stole second, before freshman second baseman Kristen Potts (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Titus and advance Gill to third. After junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) drew a walk, junior outfielder Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) singled up the middle to score Gill and tie the game, 2-2.
The Saints struck again in the top of the fifth inning when pitcher Jodie Fiacco helped her own cause by clubbing a two-run homerun over the centerfield fence. Bucknell responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to get within one, 4-3, but the Saints put the game away in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits to jump ahead by four runs. Bucknell could not muster any offense in the bottom of the frame, dropping the contest 7-3.
In the nightcap, the two teams combined for eight errors as the Bison held on for a 4-2 win. After a scoreless three innings, Siena got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth frame. Bucknell took the lead with three runs in its half of the fifth inning, taking advantage of three Saints errors in the frame. Freshman catcher Angie Stackhouse (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) opened the inning with a double and eventually scored, before Dugan hit a two-run single up the middle to put Bucknell back in front, 3-2. The Bison held off Siena, and scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, to pick up the 4-2 victory.
Bucknell moves to 8-7-2 overall on the year and will travel to Rider for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27. Siena's record goes to 9-7 on the year.
