HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team had its two-game win streak snapped with a 16-10 loss at Colgate on Friday, March 23.
The Red Raiders (3-2 overall, 1-0 Patriot League) were paced by the team's leading scorer Liz Brown who had five goals on the afternoon. Sophomore Heather Smith chipped in four goals and an assist, and rookie Jane Manning and sophomore Caitlin Houck both had three tallies in the win.
In the first half, the Red Raiders dominated play. Brown started the scoring with her first goal at 5:26. Smith followed up three minutes later to give Colgate a two-goal lead.
Bucknell's Amy Hasler (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) put the Bison (2-4 overall, 0-1 Patriot League) on the board at 8:59, but Smith countered with her second of the game to regain the two score cushion. Brown got her second less than a minute later, when she came from behind the cage, caught Bucknell goalkeeper Annie Richards (Pt. Pleasant, N.J./Lawrenceville School) by surprise, and put it to the right of Richards into an empty net.
After Brown scored her third to put Colgate up 5-1, the Bison called a time out to regroup. Bucknell was able to hold off the Red Raider attack for over three minutes afterward, until Manning scored to put the Bison in the hole by five. However, less than a minute after Manning's goal, the leading scorer for Bucknell, Suzanne Raffaele (Springfield, Pa./Archmere Academy) tallied two goals within two minutes to close the gap to three.
Without the commanding lead that they had held earlier in the contest, the Red Raiders took a time out immediately after Raffaele's second marker. Senior Ashley Evans (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) scored for the Bison less than a minute later, but Colgate burst out with four goals within three minutes to make the half-time score 10-4 in favor of the home team.
The second half began with much of the same intensity from the Red Raiders. Caitlin Houck scored 1:01 into the period, before Raffaele responded for the Bison. Colgate answered with another two to extend their lead, but then Bucknell's Meredith Wright (Bethesda, Md./Holton Arms) came down the middle of the field from the 12-meter line and shot high over the head of Colgate goalie Jane Murray to give the Bison another tally.
The Red Raiders would go on to score the next three goals, capped off by Liz Brown taking a free position shot and beating goaltender Nicole Kallis (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) low on the left side. With the score 16-6 in Colgate's favor with only seven minutes left in the game, there was little hope left for the Bison.
However, Bucknell was not through. The persistent Bison scored four more goals to close out the game, including a last-ditch effort by Kari Evans (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) with 0.2 seconds left on the clock off a free position attempt.
In goal, Jane Murray made six saves in the win for Colgate. At the other end, Richards made nine saves in the first half for Bucknell, before being relieved by Kallis who played the entire second half and came up with eight stops.
The Bison will play the second game of a three-game round robin tournament tomorrow morning at 10 am against Duquesne on Tyler's Field. The Red Raiders will complete the weekend when they face the Dukes Sunday at 12 noon.
