LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team, playing at home for the first time this season, dropped a doubleheader to visiting Columbia on Friday, March 23. The Bison fell 4-3 in nine innings in the opener, and lost 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
In game one, the Orange and Blue got on the board in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two hits and one Lions' error. Junior tri-captain Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) led off the inning with a single to shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error. Freshman catcher Angela Stackhouse (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) stepped up to the plate and sacrificed Demetriades to third, before junior outfielder Lauren Titus (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) slapped a single through the right side with one out to score Demetriades.
Bucknell carried the 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning. Columbia sophomore April Jarvis hit a two-out RBI single through the left side to knot the score at 1-1. The Bison failed to score in their half of the inning and the game headed to extra innings.
Columbia jumped ahead in the top of the eighth, scoring on a Bucknell error. Bucknell responded with one run in the bottom of the frame when junior first baseman Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) hit a double to right field to score freshman Courtney Dohoney (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green), who had been placed on second base to open in the inning due to the international tie-breaker rule. The Lions grabbed the lead for good with two more runs in the top of the ninth, and the Bison could only manage one in their half of the inning to drop the game, 4-3 in nine innings.
Demetriades and Titus both finished the game 2-for-4. Sophomore Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) went the distance on the mound, giving up six hits while striking out seven.
In the nightcap, Columbia scored one run in the second, three in the fourth and four in the fifth inning, while Lions pitcher Laura Grant threw five perfect innings, propelling Columbia to the 8-0 mercy rule victory. Grant faced the minimum 15 batters in the game, and her team pounded out 11 hits off the Bison pitching staff on the way to the win.
Bucknell falls to 6-5-2 overall and will host Albany in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24, at 1:30 p.m. Columbia improves to 6-6.
