Bucknell Women's Tennis Begins 2001 Spring Season

EWING, N.J. --- The Bucknell women's tennis team began the spring portion of its schedule by competing at the First Annual Lions' Invitational at The College of New Jersey over the weekend. In addition to the hosts from TCNJ, players from Coach Helt's team battled players from Villanova, Millersville during the two-day event.
Freshman Sam Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) turned in one of Bucknell's best performances at the event, finishing third in "Flight B." She opened with a 7-5, 6-2 win over The College of New Jersey's Kelly Hernandez before suffering a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Ashley Young of Villanova in the second round. Berthod bounced back to win the third-place match, defeating Abbey Neff of Millersville, 7-5.
In "Flight C" senior Beth Wurzburg (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and sophomore Laura Maisel (Princeton, N.J./Hun School) each won their opening round matches before falling in the second round. Wurzburg scored a hard-fought 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win over The College of New Jersey's Stacy Dinner, and Maisel defeated Villanova's Jen Zick, 7-6 (3), 6-4. The two players opted not to play against each other in the third place match.
Sophomore Jill Wurzburg (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) advanced to the third place match in "Flight A" by defeating Stephanie Ariot of Villanova (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) in her opening match. Time constraints never allowed that match to be completed. Junior co-captain Kristin Inglis (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win in the consolation bracket over Julie Darne of Villanova and finished in sixth place in "Flight A."
In doubles competition, the duo of Jill Wurzburg and freshman Kristen Pugno (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) had the most success, finishing 2-1 in "Flight C." They scored victories over The College of New Jersey (8-3) and Villanova (8-3).
Berthod and freshman Alyssa Bishop (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School f Knoxville) went 1-2 in "Flight B," defeating the team from Villanova, 8-5.
Bucknell will be back in action on Saturday, February 24, when it travels to St. Bonaventure to face the host Bonnies and Cleveland State.
