LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's basketball team shot nearly 50.0% from the field, but allowed visiting St. Bonaventure nearly 60.0% from the floor in dropping its third-straight contest, a 72-59 decision to the Bonnies in college women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
Both teams started the game on a tear offensively. The Bison made nine of their first 11 shots, getting six points from sophomore Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) in the first seven minutes to hold an 18-11 advantage. St. Bonaventure, however, opened the game with 9-of-10 shooting from the floor to keep it close, and used an 11-1 run over a five minute span to regain the lead, 27-24, with 5:15 to go in the half. A late surge by the Orange and Blue gave them a 32-29 halftime advantage. Bucknell finished the frame 14-24 from the floor for a 58.3 clip, while the Bonnies connected on half of their 26 shots in the frame.
St. Bonaventure stayed hot in the second half, and stifled the Bison offense to outscore BU, 43-27, in the stanza. The visitors hit an amazing 65.0% of their shots in the half, missing only seven times, while Bucknell shot 38.5% from the field.
Two made free throws by junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) 2:18 into the second half tied the score 34-34, but it was all St. Bonaventure from there. The Bison were as close as two on several occasions, the last time coming after a Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) layup with 9:13 to play and the score 51-49, but the Bonnies outscored Bucknell, 21-10, the rest of the way to come away with the victory.
Creamer led all players with 21 points, five assists and four steals. Also in double figures for the Bison were senior Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) with 12 and Almind with a season-best 11 points and four assists.
Courtney Mattingly led five St. Bonaventure scorers in double figures with 18 markers. Graziella Charles added 14, and Stefanie Collins, Jade Humble and Angela Scott each tossed in 10 for the 4-2 Bonnies.
Bucknell falls to 3-3 after suffering its first three game losing streak since February of 2000. The Orange and Blue head to Binghamton for a 1:00 p.m. game against the Bearcats on Saturday, December 8.
