LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Junior Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) scored a season-high 18 points, and Bucknell placed four of five starters in double-figures, but it was not enough as the Marist Red Foxes used a come-from-behind effort to defeat the Bison, 69-64, in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The Orange and Blue opened the game with a 10-0 advantage, using strong defense to hold Marist to 0-for-13 shooting from the floor. The Red Foxes did not get their first field goal of the game until the 11:08 mark of the first half with Bucknell holding a 15-6 advantage. Marist cut the Bison lead to three, 20-17, with 6:40 to play in the opening frame, but BU entered halftime with a nine point lead (33-24) after a four-point play by junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) with 20 seconds left in the half.
Bucknell came out hot in the second half and quickly built its lead to 16 with an 11-4 run just over three minutes into it. Creamer scored six of her 15 points during the stretch. Both teams were scoreless for nearly two minutes before the Red Foxes hit two free throws to get within 14 and 44-30.
A three-point play by senior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) gave the Orange and Blue a 15-point lead at 47-32 with 12:34 left in the contest. A 15-3 spurt by the visitors, spanning over four minutes, got Marist within three, 50-47, and neither team enjoyed more than a five-point lead the rest of the way. A jumper by Diesa Seidel with 56 seconds left tied the contest at 64-64 and 39 seconds later, the Red Foxes took their only lead of the contest with a made three pointer by Nina Vecchio with 17 seconds remaining in the game. After a missed three-pointer by Creamer with seven ticks on the clock, the Bison were forced to foul and Marie Fusci hit both free throws with three seconds left to give Marist a 69-64 lead and secure the win.
Bucknell held Marist to 25.8% shooting in the first half, but allowed the Red Foxes to shoot 55.6% in the second to get back in it. The Orange and Blue shot 40.7% for the game.
Rounsley and senior tri-captain Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) were the other players in double-figures for BU with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The two led the team with eight rebounds each, while senior tri-captain Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) tied a career-high with a game-best six assists.
Fusci led Marist with 14 points, Seidel had 13 and Kerry Sullivan had a team-best eight rebounds to go with 12 points.
Bucknell falls to 3-2 overall and will host Saint Bonaventure at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, for the final game in a four-game homestand. Marist improves to 3-2 overall.
