ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Mark Mascarenhas (Marietta, Ga./Marist) scored his first collegiate goal with just over 20 minutes left in regulation, tying the contest at 1-1, but Navy tallied just 1:32 into the first overtime to come away victorious in men's soccer action in Annapolis, Md., on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops Bucknell to 5-11-1 overall and 0-5-1 in Patriot League action. With the victory, Navy improves to 10-2-3 overall and clinches the final spot in the conference championship with a 3-2-2 Patriot League record.
The Midshipmen got on the board first when Joe Snyder scored the first goal of his career, heading in a rebound shot from six yards out 24:29 into the game. Dan Neverosky was credited with the assist. Despite firing off six shots during the period, Navy could only manage the one score and it remained 1-0 at halftime.
The Bison knotted the score at the 69:25 mark when junior Brian Johnson (Creamridge, N.J./Notre Dame) found freshman Michael Lookingland II (Fallston, Md./Loyola), who passed it to Mascarenhas for a score from seven yards out.
For the second time in three games, Bucknell headed to overtime when time ran out at the end of regulation with the 1-1 tie still in tact. It did not take long for the host team to strike as Navy forward Jamie Coyle netted his first goal of the season just under two minutes into overtime to give Navy its fifth win in overtime this season. Craig Ruhs' shot was knocked down in front of the Bucknell goal where Coyle got a foot on the ball and booted it in for the game-winner.
Bucknell sophomore goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) made two saves in the game, while Navy keeper Brian Steckroth, ranked second in the nation in goals against average, stopped four shots and allowed one goal.
Bucknell travels to Army for its final game of the season on Friday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m.
