INDIANOLA, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team traveled to Indianola, Pa., to take on the Panthers of Pittsburgh in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening. Pittsburgh struck twice in the opening frame to come away with the 2-0 victory, handing Bucknell its second straight shutout of the season.
The Orange and Blue fall to 5-10-1 on the year. Pittsburgh improves to 5-7-3.
Forwards Peter Veltri and Mark Sikora each scored a goal in the first half for the host team. Veltri got the Panthers on the scoreboard with a nifty lob over Bison goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) at the 11:05 mark of the opening stanza. Sikora and freshman Marco Carrizales picked up assists on Veltri's goal.
A little over 12 minutes later, Sikora got his fourth goal of the season when he blasted a shot inside the right corner of the net behind Whitaker for the 2-0 lead. Junior Miles Dowiak scored the only assist on the play.
Bucknell had several chances to break the shutout but Pittsburgh goalie Joe Conlan and the Panther defense stopped any Bison threat.
Pittsburgh outshot BU, 13-10, for the game, but the Bison held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Bucknell concludes its season with two more road games, challenging Patriot League rival Navy at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, before closing out the year with a 7:00 p.m. game at Army on November 9.
