LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior captain Andrew Aurand scored his first two goals of the season, and Bucknell rolled over Binghamton University 4-0 in non-league men's soccer action at West Field this afternoon.
The win improved the Bison's record to 5-8-1. Binghamton fell to 1-13-0.
Aurand gave Bucknell an early 2-0 advantage after scoring twice in a 7:44 span. He put the Bison on the scoreboard 21:38 into the game when he rifled in a 25-footer from the left wing off an assist from senior Nathan Hopfinger. In the 30th minute, Aurand found the back of net on a direct kick from the top of the box.
The Bison struck again just 2:44 later when junior Elliottt Maruffi-Cowley recorded his third goal of the season on a close-range shot that extended Bucknell's lead to 3-0. Freshman Dennis DeLuca and junior Brian Johnson assisted on the tally.
Bucknell rested its starting lineup in the second half, and 24 Bison ended up getting into the game. In the 76th minute, freshman Jonathan Hemmert recorded his first collegiate goal when he stroked in a 20-footer from just outside the front of the box.
Sophomore goalies Steve Whitaker, Keith Sheldon and Kevin Clifford combined to earn the Bison's shutout. Whitaker played the opening 45:00 between the pipes and made one save, while Sheldon also notched one stop in 26:54 of action. Clifford played the final 18:06 and picked up two saves.
The Bison will look to keep their Patriot League playoff hopes alive tomorrow when they host Holy Cross at noon.
