LEWISBURG, Pa. - Melissa Maher scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season just 1:29 into the contest and five teammates followed her into the scoring column as Bucknell topped St. Francis (Pa.) 6-1 in a non-league field hockey contest Tuesday evening.
The Bison have won two of their last three contests to improve to 7-9, while St. Francis, a first-year varsity program, fell to 0-16.
Precise passing led to Bucknell's initial tally of the night, as Annie Hunsicker sent a nice lead pass from midfield to Lisa Bingaman on the right wing. From deep in the corner, Bingaman threaded a pass to Maher who one-timed it home from point-blank range for a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the opening stanza Suzanne Schaubert notched her first goal of the season off an assist from Kate Ruda, who was back in the lineup after missing five games with a broken hand. Megan Hopping scored her first of the season with 9:48 remaining in the half when she blasted home a centering feed from Amy Marvel.
Larissa Carso and Meiko Boynton tacked on goals in the final 1:48 of the first half. Carso tipped in a shot from Erin Plasteras, while Boynton converted Reichenbach's pass of a penalty corner with 21 seconds remaining.
The Bison took a 6-0 lead just over six minutes into the second period when Cara Reichenbach scored unassisted from a tough angle to the left of the cage.
The Red Flash averted the shutout when Jill Neary scored directly off a penalty corner with 9:12 remaining. It was St. Francis' only shot of the night, while Bucknell collected 26. St. Francis goalkeeper Erin Hobbs made 12 saves.
The Bison wrap up their 2001 campaign this Saturday at home against Patriot League rival American at 2:30 p.m. St. Francis' season is complete.
