LEWISBURG, Pa. - A diving Lisa Bingaman (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) got the ball to senior Annie Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) with 21 ticks left on the clock for the game-winner as the Bucknell field hockey team came from behind to defeat visiting American University, 3-2, in Patriot League action on Saturday.
The victory ends Bucknell's season at 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the Patriot League. American drops to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
American opened the game strong, scoring on their first shot of the contest just 2:33 into it. Junior Magdalena Aguilar carried the ball down the field uncontested and pushed it past Bucknell goalkeeper Mel Rhoads (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) for the early 1-0 lead. The defense went to work the rest of the half, as neither team could get the offense goin. The Bison did have several opportunities to even it in the opening frame, including a shot off the post and a stellar defensive effort by American goalkeeper Laura Miller, diving to keep a ball from crossing the line, but Bucknell could not find the back of the net on its 11 shots in the half.
The Eagles quickly made it 2-0 in the second half with a goal off of a penalty corner with 33:53 left to play. Senior Kecia Jones fed sophomore Karlijn Schellens, who tipped it to sophomore Kate Finn for her first score of the season.
The Orange and Blue regrouped and used a penalty corner just under seven minutes later to get on the board when senior Lauren Campbell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) tallied her first of two goals on the day, taking a pass from junior Amy Marvel (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock).
With momentum on its side, the Bucknell offense kept pressure on the American defense and with 11:14 left on the clock, a scramble in front of the cage led to a penalty stoke attempt for the Bison. Campbell was the selected stroker, and the tri-captain converted on a shot in the upper left corner of the cage to knot the game 2-2.
With 25 seconds left on the clock, American was awarded a free hit coming out of its own defensive circle. Freshman Meiko Boynton (Bernardsville, N.J./Pingry) made a diving stop to prevent the ball from getting beyond the 25-yard line, promptly passed the ball into the circle to Bingaman, who ended up on the ground in front of the net while finding Hunsicker in front of an open right side for the game-winning goal with just 21 seconds left.
Rhoads, who played the entire first half in goal for BU, stopped four of American's seven shots in the frame. Junior Sonja Wettergreen (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) played the second half for the Bison, saving one of the Eagle's four second half attempts. American keeper Miller recorded nine saves in the contest.
