LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Elliott Maruffi-Cowley (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) planted a ball in the back of the net with 7:35 remaining in the first half to give Bucknell a 1-0 lead and that score would stand as the Bison held on to defeat visiting Saint Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Bucknell improves to 4-7-0 overall. Saint Francis (Pa.) falls to 5-7-2 on the year and snaps a five-game unbeaten streak dating back to September 28.
On a very windy afternoon, the Orange and Blue opened the first half playing with the wind to their backs and keeping play on their offensive side of the field. Bucknell led in shots, 6-2, in the frame, but none was more important than the final shot of the half when Maruffi-Cowley connected on a pass from freshman Michael Lookingland II (Fallston, Md./Loyola) in the 38th minute, scoring from six yards out for his second goal of the season. Lookingland and senior Nathan Hopfinger (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) were credited with the assist.
With just over 20 minutes to play in the second, the sky opened up and the final 20 minutes were played in a cold swirling rain. The Bison did, however, manage to maintain control in the stanza, holding the Red Flash without a shot the entire half, while getting off four of their own.
Bucknell goalkeeper, sophomore Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), saw limited action in the contest, saving one of Saint Francis' two shots for his third shutout of the year. Red Flash keeper Joe Alianiello stopped two Bison shots.
The Orange and Blue are back in action on Sunday, October 21, when they host non-conference foe Buffalo in the Homecoming game at 1:00 p.m.
