LEWISBURG, Pa. - Buffalo's Dave Pidgeon scored on a penalty kick just 2:48 into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and the Bull's staved off a persistent Bucknell offense the remainder of the game to drop the Bison, 2-1, in men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Orange and Blue fall to 4-8 overall.
Sophomore Chris Beekman (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) opened the scoring with his third goal of the season when senior Andrew Aurand (Middleburg, Pa./Middleburg) lofted an indirect kick over the defense and found Beekman waiting in front of the net. The forward headed the ball into the lower left corner 18:26 into the game to give the Bison the early 1-0 lead.
Buffalo, which led 9-7 in shots in the first half, answered just over ten minutes later when freshman Justin Higgins found the back of the net on a scramble in front of the goal. That score would stand as the two teams entered halftime in the 1-1 deadlock.
With 42:12 remaining on the game clock, a foul on Bucknell goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) led to a Buffalo penalty kick. Pidgeon put the ball just out of reach of a diving Whitaker to stake the Bulls to a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
The Bison had numerous opportunities to knot the score throughout the period, outshooting Buffalo 15-5 in the frame and ending the game with a season-high 22 shots, but could not capitalize.
Whitaker ended the contest with five saves in 90 minutes of work. Buffalo's Chris Vavrina got the win, working the entire second half for six saves and no goals against. Brian Wozniak was in goal for the Bull's in the first half, stopping two Bucknell shots.
