Bucknell Track Competes Well In the 6th Annual Bucknell-Hershey Relays

Lewisburg, Pa. --- The Bucknell men's and women's track & field teams hosted the 6th Annual Bucknell Invitational over the weekend, and in the non-team scoring event, turned in several outstanding performances.
The Orange and Blue captured 11 individual events and had four times/marks that placed on the school's all-time top-10 performers charts. Leading the way was junior Andrea Nyce (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) who won the pole vault with a height of 11'4." Also winning her event was freshman Maria Garcia (Providence, R.I./Hope) who out threw the competition in the 20 lb. weight throw with a 44' 8 ?" toss. The most stunning performance of the weekend was by the Distance Medley Relay team comprised of juniors Steph Bango (Smethport, Pa./Smethport), LaTonya McSwain (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken), Becki Marshall (Montgomery, N.Y./Pine Bush Central) and sophomore Khadija Shariff (Landsdowne, Pa./Upper Darby), which narrowly missed breaking a Gerhard Fieldhouse by 3.26 seconds. The relay team would have to settle for the second best time in school history, crossing the line in 11:58.46.
On the men's side, senior James Hollins (Feeding Hills, Mass./Northfield-Mt. Hermon) captured the triple jump with a final leap of 46' 5 ?". Classmates Brad Wertz (Altoona, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) and James Stack (Damascus, Md./Damascus) captured the 3000-meter and 5000-meter runs with times of 8:49.38 and 15:41.48, respectively. Putting in a fine performance in the 35 lb. weight throw for the victory was sophomore Adam Kaufman (Bridgeton, N.J./St. Marks) with a 47' 10 ?" measurement. Also receiving the gold in the sophomore class was Greg Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) who won the mile run in a time of 4:20.42. Rounding out the great individual performances for the men was junior J.C. Whitaker (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), who tied the school's second best pole vault height of 15' 9" while capturing the event.
The Distance Medley Relay team of seniors Matt Davis (Bay Head, N.J./The Peddie School), and Andy Hunsberger (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) and sophomores Artie Gulden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and Eric Furst (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen Central) captured gold in a time of 10:23.37. And finally, the 4x800 Relay team of junior P.J. Ward (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood), junior Cotie Strong (Roaring Branch, Pa./Canton), freshman Aaron Hanlon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and junior Mike Euell (Garnerville, N.J./North Rockland) finished first in a time of 8:00.47
The men's and women's track & field teams will be in action again on Saturday, January 20, when they host Delaware, Lock Haven, Towson, St. Francis (PA), Wagner and Florida International at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse.
