COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER: BUCKNELL 1, Lehigh 0 (2OT)
Lewisburg Pa. --- The Bucknell women's soccer team extended its winning streak to five games this afternoon when it defeated Lehigh in a double overtime thriller 1-0. The Bison are now 2-0 in conference play after this victory. This is the first time since the '97 season that the women's soccer program has opened with two wins in the Patriot League.
The contest was filled to the rim with action and saw many sudden changes in momentum and fortune. After 90 minutes of play the two squads were still looking up at a blank scoreboard. The first real scoring opportunity came in the last minute of the first overtime when Bucknell freshman, Kristie Simon (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township), slipped past the Lehigh goalkeeper only to see her shot carom off the right post.
A similar situation occurred in the second overtime when Bucknell freshman, Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area), set the ball up and shot a rocket that bounced off the left post this time.
The Orange and Blue clinched the victory in the final seconds of the second overtime when senior tri-captain Kristen Erb (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) retrieved a shot that had hit the post and put it in the back of the night. The game-winning goal for Erb was also the first of her career. Assisting the goal was the striker of the initial shot, sophomore Tara Utchel (Heidelberg, Pa./Sewickley).
The women's soccer team improves to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The next potential victim for the Bison will be Mount St. Mary's in a contest this Tuesday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m.
