COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY - Drexel 5, Bucknell 1
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Bucknell field hockey team dropped a 5-1 contest to Drexel University in nonleague play at St. Joseph's University's Finnesey Field on Tuesday, August 29. It is the third straight year the Bison have opened with Drexel, falling to the Dragons each year.
Drexel junior forward Pamie Zukowski scored two goals and senior forward Kelly O'Donnell added a goal and an assist to lead Drexel past Bucknell, 5-1.
Zukowski opened the scoring just 1:04 into the game and sophomore midfielder Julie Gahman converted a penalty corner 10:29 into the contest as the Dragons staked themselves to a 2-0 halftime lead, outshooting the Bison 18-1 in the process.
Bucknell junior forward Dena Ebert (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) scored early in the second period to cut her team's deficit in half, but the home team answered with goals from Zukowski, sophomore midfielder Kristina Backenstose and O'Donnell during a 7:40 span later in the game.
"I thought we played really well for about 30 of the 70 minutes. We are just consistency away from being a solid team," commented Bucknell head coach Heather Lewis. "Drexel played outstanding and they are going to have a tremendous year."
The Bison (0-1) next travel to Siena on September 2 for a 12:00 noon game. Drexel is 3-0.
