COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER: BUCKNELL 3, Pittsburgh 0
Lewisburg, Pa. --- The Bucknell women's soccer team
received its first win of the season this afternoon in its home
opener against Pittsburgh, 3-0. The win came for the Bison in
some very humid weather conditions and in front of an energetic
crowd.
After a scoreless first half, the Orange and Blue were given
their first opportunity to scratch the scoreboard when freshman
Kristie Simon (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) was awarded
a penalty kick in the 75th minute of play. Simon connected on
the PK to give the Bison a 1-0 lead with only 15 minutes left
on the game clock. Just a little over two minutes later Simon
did it again when she scored on a chip shot off a pass from junior
Anna Hall (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy). The goal
extended the Bison lead to two goals. The excitement continued
for Bucknell when only 25 seconds after Simon's second goal of
the game, sophomore Tara Utchel (Heidelberg, Pa./Sewickley)
punched a shot into the upper left hand corner of the goal to
make it a 3-0 game. Assisting on Utchel's goal was Simon, giving
her five points for the contest.
In goal for the Bison was sophomore Laurie Purse (Marysville,
Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) who made 11 saves and earned
her first shutout of the 2000 campaign.
Coach Findlay was very pleased with how her team played and
had this to say on her team's first win, "It was a good team
effort defensively in the second half. We played well as a team
and we won as a team."
The Bison improve to 1-2 on the season and will play their next game against St. Joseph's on Tuesday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Philadelphia.
