LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman guard Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) led all scorers with a career-high 26 points and sophomore guard Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) added 25 points as the Bucknell women's basketball team improved to 7-1 with a 79-66 victory over visiting Harvard on Saturday, December 9.
Playing in Davis Gymnasium for the final time in the year 2000, the Bison jumped out to 10 point lead at 18-8 just seven minutes into the contest. The Crimson would cut it to five several times and finally got within four, 25-21, with 4:57 to go in the half, before Bucknell mounted a 14-4 run to close the frame with a 39-25 lead. Creamer scored six of her 12 first half points during the five-minute stretch. Almind added 16 markers in the opening frame.
After allowing Harvard to get as close as nine four minutes into the second stanza, the Bison increased their lead to 18 with 9:43 to go in the game when freshman Heidi Helsing (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) connected on a three-pointer to put Bucknell ahead, 54-36. Harvard would not go quietly, however, and the Crimson staged a rally of their own, outscoring the Orange and Blue, 12-0 over the next two minutes to get within six, 54-48. Bucknell clung to a five-point lead with 52 seconds remaining in the contest, but with Harvard forced to foul, the Bison were clutch at the free throw line, making eight-of-eight attempts to ice the 79-66 victory.
Harvard, which outscored Bucknell in the second half, 41-40, was led by Sarah Johnson with 23 points. Also in double-figures for the Crimson was Hana Peljto with 12 points, while both players pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Junior forward Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) led all players on the boards, grabbing a season-high 12 rebounds, nine of those coming on the defensive glass.
Bucknell heads into a 20-day layoff with a 7-1 overall record. The Bison are in action again on Friday, December 29, when they travel to Villanova to face the Wildcats in the first round of the Wildcat Christmas Classic at 6:00 p.m. Harvard falls to 1-6.
