VILLANOVA, Pa. --The Bucknell women's basketball team, in action again for the first time in 20 days, suffered only its second loss of the season with an 89-54 setback against Villanova in the first round of the PNC Wildcat Classic at Villanova on Friday, December 29. The 89 points is the highest total the Bison have allowed all season.
For only the second time this season, the Bison trailed at halftime, entering the intermission trailing 48-29 behind the three-point shooting of a hot Villanova team. The Wildcats hit six treys in the first half and finished the game with 11. Despite shooting over 40.0% from the field in the half, the Bison could not overcome the taller Villanova squad, trailing 25-17 in rebounds at the break. Freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) led the Orange and Blue offensively, tallying 11 points in the half.
Things started sluggishly for Bucknell in the second half, as the Bison had only scored seven points more than nine minutes into it, while Villanova used a 16-7 run to open the half and never look back. The Wildcats built their lead to as many as 37 in the half and Bucknlell would get no closer than 26 after the 10:00 mark.
The Orange and Blue were led by Almind with 19 points, and sophomore Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) with 11 points (nine coming in the second half.) Eight other Bison were in the scoring column. Junior Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) tallied six points, while junior Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) both added four. Junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) had three points, while juniors Rebekah May (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) and Kate Florence (East Greenwich, R.I./Bay View Academy), and freshman Jade Fleming (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) each had two points and freshman Kristin Valdner (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) rounded out the scoring with one point. LeBlanc and Almind led BU on the boards with seven a piece.
The Bison fall to 7-2 overall and will face Northeastern in the consolation game of the tournament at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 30.
