
Swimming and Diving Finds Success At Drexel

Lewisburg, Pa. --- This past weekend the Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Drexel University to take part in a dual meet on Saturday, November 4. At the end of the day, both teams climbed onto the bus victorious.
The men's team defeated the Drexel Dragons 128-113. The Bison had six individuals' finish first in their respective events. Junior Chris Neary (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) won the 50-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 21.92. Winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.60 was freshman Peter Garvin (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel). Senior Bill Orendorf (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) took the checkered flag in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:57.25. Freshman Matt Hallowell (Bath, Maine/Morse) rounded out Bucknell's success in the freestyle events with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle and a time of 10:09.68.
In non-freestyle events, freshmen Michael Harrigan (Doylestown, Pa./La Salle College HS) and Jack Sheehan (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional) won the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Harrigan was victorious with a time of 1:59.08 and Sheehan with a time of 2:00.58.
The men's team also performed well in the two relay events, taking first place in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:37.40 and first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay as an exhibition in a time of 3:13.40. The victorious members of the 400-yard medley relay team were senior John Ferriter (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy), Neary, sophomore Michael Guskey (Lexington, Kent./Tates Creek), and Sheehan.
The women's team swam well and defeated the Dragons 131-97. The team tallied six individual first place finishes and two relay events were won. Junior Abby Weaver (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was the only dual winner for the Orange and Blue as she was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM. She finished with a time of 54.76 in the 100-yard freestyle and touched the wall first in the 200-yard IM at 2:12.66.
Freshman Anna Sommers (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and senior Megan Jones (Glendale, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) were winners for Bucknell in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle events, respectively. Sommers won with a time of 25.45 and Jones was clocked at 2:01.11 in her event. Also winning for the Orange and Blue were junior Barbara Morgan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River) in the 200-yard breast (2:32.09) and sophomore Darby Golino (Milford, Conn./Our Lady of Academy) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.47.
Freshman Sarah Petcavage (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) finished second in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 215.475. This score qualifies her for ECAC's and is the first diver under the guidance of Diving Coach Errol Carter to achieve ECAC qualifying scores. Additional support to the Bison cause came from the victorious 400-yard medley relay foursome of senior Molly Lowe (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), sophomore Lauren Mosler (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes), and freshmen Lynne Ashenfelter (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and Meghan Freese (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock). For the second meet in a row this foursome was unbeatable finishing in a time of 4:09.06.
The men's and women's teams improve to 2-1 on the season and remain 0-1 in conference swimming. The two teams will return home to the friendly confines of Freas Pool when they host a dual swim meet with Towson on Saturday, November 11, 2000. The diving events will start at 11:00 a.m. and the swimming at 1:00 p.m.
