
Men's Swimming Team Comes Away With Impressive Victory Versus Towson

Lewisburg, Pa. --- This afternoon the Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted the Towson Tigers in Freas Pool. The men's team swam itself to a deciding 174-67 victory over the Tigers. Despite setting a new pool record today, the women's team did not fair quite as well, narrowly losing to Towson 125-116.
The men's team dominated the Tigers by winning 12 out of the 14 events. The only two events that slipped through the cracks for the Bison were the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard backstroke. The Bison had eight individuals' finish first in their respective events. Junior Chris Neary (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) won the 50-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 21.57. Winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.44 was senior John Ferriter (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy). Sophomore Gonzalo Diaz (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.86. In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Peter Garvin (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) touched the wall first in 1:46.29. Completing the freestyle sweep for the Orange and Blue was Diaz with his second victory of the meet in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:03.97.
Excelling in the non-freestyle events were freshmen Michael Harrigan (Doylestown, Pa./La Salle College HS), sophomore Stephen Schwanhausser (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), and senior Benjamin Lim (Singapore, SG/Anglo-Chinese School). Lim won the 200-yard IM (2:01.80), Harrigan claimed first place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.76) and Schwanhausser was victorious in the 200-yard breast (2:14.44).
Freshman diver Adam Fackler (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) contributed to the victory with first place points in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Fackler scored a 238.73 on the 1-meter board and a 207.90 on the 3-meter board.
The men's team also performed well in the two relay events, taking first place in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:33.07 and first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:14.69. The victorious members of the 400-yard medley relay team were Ferriter, Neary, sophomore Michael Guskey (Lexington, Kent./Tates Creek), and freshman Jack Sheehan (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional). The 400-yard freestyle relay team was comprised of Neary, Garvin, senior Jeff Sharpe (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), and Ferriter.
The women's team swam well but came up a little bit short on the Tigers, 125-116. The team tallied four individual first place finishes and two relay events were won. Junior Abby Weaver (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), the most valuable swimmer for the Bison in this meet, was a dual winner for the Orange and Blue as she was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle. She finished with a time of 53.66 in the 100-yard freestyle and touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:58.09.
Freshman Sarah Petcavage (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) was the other dual winner for the Bison as she finished first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 220.28. Petcavage completed her sweep of the diving events with a solid victory on the 3-meter board with a score of 184.95.
As usual, the women's team has strong performances from its relay teams. The 400-yard medley relay foursome of sophomore Darby Golino (Milford, Conn./Our Lady of Academy), sophomore Lauren Mosler (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verde), senior Molly Lowe (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), and freshman Meghan Freese (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) took first place with a time of 4:04.54. Breaking the Freas Pool record for the 400-yard freestyle relay was the foursome of Freese, freshman Anna Sommers (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), freshman Lynne Ashenfelter (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and Weaver with a time of 3:39.44. The previous pool record was 3:39.80 for the relay.
The men's team improves to 3-1 on the season while the women now stand even at 2-2. The two teams will swim next when they travel to Piscataway, N.J. to compete against Rutgers, Fordham and Rider on Friday, November 17 at 4:00 p.m.
