
Bucknell Men Swim Well at Tri-Meet With Rutgers & Rider

Piscataway, N.J. --- The Bucknell University men's and women's swimming & diving teams took on Rutgers University and Rider University in a tri-meet on Friday night and swam very well, coming away with a split against the competition.
On the men's side, the Bison defeated Rider by a score of 140-90, and fell to the host Scarlet Knights, 176-60. Bucknell, now 4-2 on the season, got individual-event gold medal performances from senior tri-captain Jeff Sharpe (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), freshman Peter Garvin (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), and junior Chris Neary (Philadelphia, Pa./Central). Sharpe won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.56, Garvin captured the 100-free in 48.10, and Neary touched the wall first in the 100-yard fly with a time of 52.19.
The three then teamed with senior tri-captain John Ferriter (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:24.57, a time that ranks sixth on Bucknell's all-time list. The men's 200-yard medley relay, consisting of freshman Jack Sheehan (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional), sophomore Michael Guskey (Lexington, Kent./Tates Creek), Neary and Sharpe, also captured gold touching in at 1:35.98 - the tenth-best time in school history.
The women, who improved their season record to 3-3 overall, did not have any individual event winners but had four second-place finishes (one of which was a relay) and four third-place showings (one of which was a relay) in the competition. Junior Abby Weaver (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) led the way with runner-up placements in both the 200-yard free (1:58.33) and the 100-free (53.87). In addition, she swam the lead leg on the Bison's 200-yard free relay which finished second in 1:41.11.
Freshman Daniela Faas (Ludwigshafen, Germany/Worcester Academy-Mass.) placed third in the 1,650-free and jumped into the school's Top-10 in ninth-place with a time of 18:11.63. The Bucknell teams will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, December 2-3, when they host the Bucknell Swimming Invitational featuring Penn and Binghamton.
